If you hear of any big Indoor Meets for the youth please inform me because we are trying to get our young athletes more exposure. We are willing to travel but it would be nice to know about the meets in advance so parents can plan accordingly.

In the south, we don't have really big meets so through this group we could talk about Big Meets we have heard about.

Wow, the competition is definitely a lot tougher where you are! Her 200 time would be a state middle school record here! I guess we are fortunate to have middle school track, though they can run on the high school team, too, if they are good enough, and some do. My daughter will probably do triple jump in at least a couple of high school meets for more experience because a lot of the middle school meets don't have that event, and our high school team doesn't have a triple jumper.

The Mason-Dixon games is a fairly big meet I guess; it's considered our high school and middle school indoor state championship, even though most schools don't *really* have an indoor season here. There is also an open and masters division. It's mostly KY school teams that compete, but I think unattached kids can enter the open division. They make a big deal about it because it's the 2nd oldest indoor meet in the country. Personally, I don't care for it. I don't like the limited events, shorter, wooden track, and the officials make a lot of mistakes. It's in Louisville on the first weekend in March; middle school & Masters on Friday night, high school on Saturday.

My daughter's in 8th grade, so we haven't had to deal with the tough HS region, yet. For our middle school state meet, there is no qualifying; each team just enters 1 entry per event. I've just been preparing her for next year, to not be too disappointed if she doesn't qualify for state the first year or two of HS.

Her specialty is long/triple jump, but she will do some 100/200/400 sprints/relays, too. We don't really have indoor track in KY. As far as I know, there is only one place where they have indoor meets, but it is not centrally located, so only a few schools participate. We have nowhere to practice indoors and the pit is not maintained during the off-season, so can't really do much until it warms up enough to practice outside in March :( We may go the one big indoor meet, the Mason-Dixon games, but we won't have had much preparation. I don't really like indoor track, to be honest. She does swimming in the winter to help stay in shape, and runs on the track or cross-country course on the rare nice days.

How old is your child, and what events does he/she do?

We really haven't had much experience with the USATF or AAU JO meets. Unfortunately, our state (KY) is really weak in track & field. There are very few youth clubs, none close enough for us, and the school coaches really don't encourage kids to do the USATF/AAU stuff. Participation in post-season meets is really low; pretty much if you show up to the state meet you will move on to regionals. My daughter did do the state USATF JO last year, but had an injury so didn't get to compete in the regional, and had another injury this year that prevented her from participating in either. I know our region is not nearly as tough as yours, though. There is the regular USATF Youth Championship that you can get into based on qualifying times, rather than having to move up thru state and regional meets.

I can sympathize, though, as we are in the same boat with our high school region. We are in probably one of the toughest, if not the toughest, regions in the state (especially for jumpers) and only the top 2 qualify for state. The lower finishers at our regional had longer jumps that some of the ones who did get to go to state from other regions. This year they experimented with also qualifying the next top ten in the state based on time/distance in addition to the top 2 regional winners, which did help get in some of those who really should be there. It does seem like USATF does need to do something to make it's regions more equal somehow, either re-districting or allowing more qualifiers from the regions with high concentrations of talent. But maybe they figure that's why they have both the JO and the Youth Championships, one based on state/regional preliminaries and the other based on performance standards??
